Tennessee is missing its mark once again when it pertains to protecting its Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics. Recently, legislation was passed to enhance charges and penalties on assaults towards law enforcement personnel through the "Back the Blue Act." Other public safety workers, such as EMS personnel and firefighters, were not considered as part of this.
EMS personnel face growing threats of assaults and on-the-job injuries. Sadly, there is not much attention or recognition here in Tennessee to address these issues. Assault or battery against ANY public safety worker should be a felony!
Below is a list of states and their respective laws pertaining to assaults against EMS. The vast majority of these states make assaults against EMTs and Paramedics an aggrivated offense (felony). I only counted 10 states that either didn't have enhanced charges and/or penalties or where the information was not in reach. Sadly, Tennessee was one of those 10.
